Specially for Still Art Foundation, under the supervision of Lunar Hare team, we designed the album for Julia Mayorova's personal exhibition "Silent Mode" at the Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow.
Julia Mayorova is a young artist with a unique perspective that works in the genre of portrait photography. Julia has worked with numerous Russian and international brands and fashion magazines and A-list celebrities including Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lopez, Cindy Crawford, Shia LaBeouf, George Clooney, and Karlie Kloss, among others. Her first solo exhibition, "Silent Mode," was initiated by Still Art Foundation at the Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow, as part of their publishing and educational activities. Our team worked under the curatorship of the Lunar Hare agency to design the exhibition album.
The album is a selection of portraits captured by Julia in the moment when the mind begins to transition between the conscious and the unconscious. Instead of putting her models in assumed positions, Julia's main goal is to reveal their personalities. Contrary to a more conventional approach where the model's gaze reflects their character and charisma, Julia portrays her models relaxed with their eyes closed to see the person as they are when they are alone with themselves.
Following the brief, it was essential to fit the cover design into the style of the books and catalogues previously published by Still Art Foundation. The album was intended to be a memorial object documenting Julia's extensive body of work, a collector's item that could be showcased on the shelves of museum book shops.
One of the main challenges was to reflect the feeling of a serene mind through the design. To achieve that, we set the layout grid dictated by the rhythm of the photographs, leaving a generous amount of negative space to enhance the viewer's perception of the artworks. We chose an elegant yet rigorous typeface Gramatika to support the structure we created and to make the portraits stand out even more.
